Podcast
Hi Girls! We need to collaborate this week for our podcast. We can use the three concepts in the directions, unless you have other ideas, for the things each of us discuss [Why we are using Project Based Learning, what we have done so far, and the things we will still be doing]. So we can each pick one to talk about and then post our scripts under this post. I am not familiar with Audacity at all. Are either of you? I'm sure the directions explain how to send this to each other and record...let's focus on what we are going to say first.
I will do the section about project based learning, unless one of you would prefer that topic.
Talk soon! Dianne.

Hi there! Here is what I put together for a script for the section about why we are using project based learning. I figured this would be the first section, so I did a little intro. at the beginning. Take a look and tell me what you think...if i am missing anything or is anything doesn't fit. Once we all have our scripts done, we can talk about recording and putting this together. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOur students are in full swing learning about monitoring weather. We are using an approach called project based learning to implement the weather curriculum this year. Project based learning is an highly engaging style of learning in which students are challenged to gain a deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying through real world applications and challenges. Our students have been participating in activities that are much more engaging than a traditional approach, including reading from the textbook, defining terms, and listening to teacher lectures. Through activities such as daily weather observation and journaling, pen pals in Alaska, and a school-wide weather report our students will delve into the subject of monitoring weather as scientists, researchers, and reporters rather than students being talked at and expected to retain information that is given to them. Our students, using project based learning, will instead be challenged to find the answers, research the unknown, and teach the information to others. The benefits of project based learning are great. Students are able to use their inquiring minds and with the guidance and structure that comes from the teacher, they are likely to build comprehensive understandings of the subject and successfully master the content expectations.
I meant to also say that this is about one minute when I read it slowly and clearly like I will for the podcast. The whole thing needs to be 3-5 mins, so if we each did a minute it would be fine. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great so far Dianne. I am not familiar with Audacity, but I've looked through the instruction portion on eLearning. I can be the one to put the individual podcasts together into one, and then turn it in. I'll work on my script tonight and tomorrow and post it on here for you to see. We should also start thinking about what background music we would like to use. By the time we add the music fading in and out for the beginning and end of the podcast we should be in the 3-5 minute range as long as we all have approximately 1 minute each. (:
ReplyDeleteAlso, this is not due until the 28th. Not this Sunday, so no need to stress.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! Thanks for pointing that out!!! :)
ReplyDeleteSorry I haven't gotten my script posted. I'm working on making it longer right now. I can focus on the what we plan to do section. I was wondering what we should specifically talk about though since we haven't really "done" any of these things with actual students... are we just supposed to assume? Little confused on that
ReplyDeleteYea, I think you just assume. Like, thinking about our concept map and lesson plans you can talk about the things we are including in our unit.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I should have mine done by Friday, and Rachael will be doing hers on my computer. I'll just select some music and put in as the background music. If you have yours done feel free to email it to me anytime so I can get it all put together. (:
ReplyDeleteHere is what I have for the "where we are headed/big idea" portion of the podcast. I think that this should be the second part, followed by the "what we have done so far" part. Sound good?
ReplyDeleteThroughout this year, we will be taking our students on a journey learning many different things about weather monitoring. As with any project, we are envisioning one big idea, and one main concept for where we are headed. We want our students to be able to know how individuals monitor weather, as well as report it, record it, and present it. Using what we have planned for this unit on weather monitoring, our students will be focusing on weekly weather reports. Having weekly weather reports will require students to not only retain information, but apply it as well. They will be learning vocabulary that will be put to use when they are talking about being meteorologists, and doing TV reports. Allowing our students opportunities to collaborate with one another through project based learning will give way to deeper understanding of the information and research that they will be doing and learning. Our students will be permitted to communicate with one another, or group members, on an online blog, where we will have access to check their progress. Incorporating the use of internet, specifically a blog, will give students the opportunity to bounce ideas off one another, and perhaps see a different perspective. We also plan to make weather journals and have pen pals with a different school to show weather patterns as well as compare and contrast various areas’ weather to our own. Project based learning opens many doors when designing large projects, or units to cover in class. Incorporating the many aspects of project based learning allows our students to do more than just regurgitate information.
P.S. Just a reminder that I need you to email me your recording so I can combine them all. Thanks!
Ok! I will send you mind this afternoon! I am figuring out Audacity now. :)
ReplyDeleteperfect!
ReplyDeleteSent to your gmail :)
ReplyDeletejust listened to your to parts on Kelsey's computer. They sound great!!! I'm working on getting my script perfected :)
ReplyDeleteok here is my script!
ReplyDeleteUsing vocabulary as our base idea, we have been able to make great strides in our student’s learning about weather. Not only are they more aware of what is going on in our atmosphere, but they can more readily describe the activity with correct definitions. This has been demonstrated most often through the weekly weather reports. Our students have written scripts, researched weather patterns and made predictions for a few weeks now. In each script, we have required that at least one vocabulary word is used. These words include precipitation, climate, humidity, condensation and many more. Students have also demonstrated their learning through their weather journals. Each week, they turn in one entry for review. When the entry is returned to them, students type and save each one to eventually compile into a bound journal. This part of the project works to expand each students understanding of recording weather. Here they must find the required information, such as high and low temperatures and wind speeds, through designated web sites and their observation. Through our Project Based Learning approach, we feel our students get more out of this unit. Instead of dedicating a single day or week to the topic of weather monitoring, we have tried to expand their learning by incorporating technology and a more intricate project style into the traditional teaching method.
Looks good to me!! :)
ReplyDeleteLet me know if I can do anything else tonight!
I think I'm done. I am going to try and attach it to our blog so you can all hear it. (:
ReplyDeleteSo I can't add it on here. But I will email it to you now! Gmail accounts. (: Thanks again for your help and participation.
DeleteSorry for another post! I sent it to the email you sent me your portion on. So your wmich account.
